This is a guide to online resources for kids, teenagers,
people who work/live with kids and teenagers, and for those
interested in their welfare.

If you have things to add to the list, either resources that
weren't listed (you can offer yourself as an online resource
as long as you know how you can be useful and are descriptive
about it), or if you can add additional comments/descriptions
to the resources listed....

THE GUIDE WANTS A HOME
If someone can provide the kid/teen, kid/teen workers resource guide
with an FTP site, AND...
If someone else (or the same person, if ambitious!) can
translate the guide into HTML format and put it in such
a way where people can subscribe to these lists, do searches
for keywords, etc...
...that'd be *wonderful*!
Once again - Listowners are welcome to place this text file in
their library archives...

GUIDE TO ONLINE RESOURCES FOR YOUTH AND YOUTH WORKERS
NOTE: there are several kinds of resources.
One of the more unique resources offered here is
the Individual Resource. This is a person
who is offering him/herself as somewhat
of an expert in certain issues. This
may help solve one of the bigger
problems of online work - finding people
who know what's going on, and know how
to help. This is a very generous thing
of them to do. Don't be afraid to make
use of them!

ADDRESS: KIDLINK@VM.NODAK.EDU
SHORT DESCRIPTION: Bringing together 10-15 year old children worldwide
TYPE OF RESOURCE: MAILING LIST
LAST UPDATED: January 27, 1995
LONG DESCRIPTION: The goal of KIDLINK is to get as many
10-to-15-year-old children as possible involved
in a GLOBAL dialog.
KIDLINK is based on the idea that getting kids
around the world to talk to each other will allow
them a direct experience with friends having the
common experience of childhood but often in
very different circumstances.
By hearing a range of opinions and developing
familiarity with different ideas, we can hope to
overcome some communication barriers and solve
some problems in a more cooperative manner.
We hope that when KIDLINK kids become adults they
will take a more global and long-term perspective
on issues, rather than acting to maximize local,
short-term interests.
KIDLINK is impartial as to what methods are being
used to solve the issues of the world today.
KIDLINK does not promote specific solutions to
these issues, or any political points-of-view.
! NOTE TO GUIDE COMPILER FROM DAN WHEELER: !
! "It is important to us that you make clear !
! our age limits. We hate for people to get !
! interested and then to tell them that they !
! can't join us because they are outside of !
! the age range." !
! !
! In other words, while you can receive !
! information on the project and get work !
! on getting a classroom online with this !
! project, the "chat" is *ONLY* for people !
! age 10 through age 15. If you are under !
! the age of 10, you will have to wait. !
! If you are over the age of 15 and want !

SHORT DESCRIPTION: "Listener" for people who work with youth
TYPE OF RESOURCE: INDIVIDUAL RESOURCE
LAST UPDATED: January 29, 1995
LONG DESCRIPTION: I would be willing to act as a somewhat experienced
"listener" to provide support for people who are
working with youth.
Briefly, my wife and I raised three girls (we now
have 4 grandchildren), and we have been foster
parents during two different periods of our life,
in two different counties. We have had a wide
variety of children in our care from infants to
troubled adolescents. Our latest foster son has
been a child with extreme attachment disorder,
diminished intellectual abilities, and lots of
other emotional problems. In addition to our
personal backgrounds, my wife worked for several
years as an Aide in Special Education classrooms
and has taken almost enough course work to begin
her student teaching until she decided that she did
not want to teach. As for myself, I am a teacher
in a Behavior Disordered program in a residential
treatment (criminal and/or drug-related behaviors).
I originally started teaching English in regular
education in 1963, but I was out of teaching from
1969 to 1985. When I returned to teaching, I
returned to school and got my MS in Special
Education in 1988.
I do not present myself as an "expert" based on
some type of empirical, scientific evidence, but I
do feel that I have enough life experiences in
dealing with young people, both professionally and
personally.

available through the index.
America Online users can access back issues through
the following steps:

SHORT DESCRIPTION: DESTINATION: EARTH Software program simulates growing up
TYPE OF RESOURCE: SOFTWARE
LAST UPDATED: January 30, 1995
LONG DESCRIPTION: I wrote a software program that simulates growing
up in america. NO BIASES. Starts at age 17, in
HS, and player/teen has his life before him.
Events happen and decisions need to be made.
Covers education, career, finances, social
relationships, family and crises (drugs,
aids). Game is not perfect, but does show
teens/parents what their life MAY BE. Player
chooses personality and social-economic background
at game start.
I am a layman, but this serious, educational game
definitely shows teens what life can be about. A
strong emphasis is made on goals, attitudes and
activities of player. These are used to establish
success.
The scenario is StarTrek/2001 that helps set the
tone of the game.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: The National Parent Information Network
TYPE OF RESOURCE: GOPHER, WWW
LAST UPDATED: January 30, 1995
LONG DESCRIPTION: The National Parent
Information Network
A New National Resource
for Parents, Families,
and People Who Support Them
Sponsored by
ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education
(ERIC/EECE), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education (ERIC/CUE), Teacher's
College, Columbia University, New York City
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The National Parent
Information Network (NPIN)
The ERIC Clearinghouses on Elementary and Early Childhood Education
(ERIC/ EECE) and on Urban Education (ERIC/ CUE) invite you to join
them on the National Parent Information Network, an Internet-based
information network and service for parents and people who support
them in raising and educating their children.
Why Is NPIN Needed?
Easy access to high-quality information is an essential component
of any program that aims to help parents become informed partners
in their children's education. Community organizations, health and
social service agencies, libraries, parent centers, and schools are
often asked for information on parenting or on how to be actively
involved in children's learning.
This information is already available from thousands of
organizations, associations, and publishers. Before now, however,
few efforts have been directed to creating a single point of access
to this information. The National Parent Information Network is
focusing its efforts on a national drive to acquire and disseminate
high-quality, easy-to-understand parenting and parent-related
materials. The focus is on creating an attractive, widely available
information collection that incorporates graphics and other parent-
friendly features on the Internet. NPIN is working to:
* build an information system that can be integrated with local
parent and family resources;
* reach out to and train parents, especially low-income
parents, and people who work collaboratively with them, to
acquire the skills needed to use NPIN and to participate in
the emerging national information infrastructure; and
* assure a simple, attractive, single point of access to
parenting information that is easy to use.
What Will NPIN Do?
The University of Illinois and the U.S. Department of Education
supported the initial development of NPIN. The national effort
to collect information is well underway, and NPIN already
includes one of the largest collections of information on
parenting and child development on the Internet. NPIN now
includes, or will soon include, the following components:
* short articles written for parents of children from birth
through adolescence on a variety of topics, including
child rearing and development; general health; behaviors;
talents; disabilities; testing; working with teachers and
schools; and home activities;
* PARENTS AskERIC, a question-answering service for parents,
teachers, administrators, and parent education and parent
involvement specialists that will link them to subject
experts in professional associations, clearinghouses,
universities, and government agencies;
* forums for discussion of common concerns shared by
parents, teachers, and parent educators;
* listings of useful, usually inexpensive materials available
from professional associations, publishers, and other
organizations;
* descriptions of innovative or exemplary parent education
and involvement programs in schools and communities; and
* access to relevant ERIC digests and other education-related
materials.
How Can You Participate?
* Use the system! If you have Internet access, gopher to:
ericps.ed.uiuc.edu
gopher to ericps (OK 5/15/96)
Or, use our world wide web site. The URL for NPIN's
home page is
http://ericps.ed.uiuc.edu/npin/npinhome.html (OK 5/15/96)
WWW to ericps
(OK 5/15/96)
* Work with NPIN to share your materials with parents. The
growing list of organizations contributing information to NPIN
already includes the National Urban League, the National PTA,
the Center for Early Adolescence, and several ERIC
clearinghouses. Many other groups will soon provide materials.
* Provide feedback and suggest new materials to be acquired.
* Contact ERIC/EECE or ERIC/CUE to contribute materials or for
assistance in using NPIN.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Banned Books Online (including many children's books)
TYPE OF RESOURCE: WWW
LAST UPDATED: May 15, 1996
LONG DESCRIPTION: Banned Books Online is a new Web page featuring
books available on-line that have been the objects
of censorship, particularly by legal authorities or
by schools. The on-line exhibit gives short
descriptions of the titles, which range from
"Ulysses" to "Little Red Riding Hood". It
also describes how and why each book was censored
or suppressed. You can then follow hypertext links
from the top-level page to the works themselves, so
that you can see what the censors didn't want people
to see. Pointers to other resources (both on- and
off-line) on censorship issues and on-line
literature are provided. The exhibit is based at
Carnegie Mellon University, where the administration
recently announced the university would censor
numerous newsgroups (including text-based groups)
related to sexuality, citing fears of legal
liability as its reason. The exhibit is
particularly appropriate now, as a reminder of the
continuing struggle for free expression and the
increasingly important role of computer-based forms
of expression.

GTORY 53
ADDRESS: Y-RIGHTS@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU
SHORT DESCRIPTION: Discussion on the rights of kids/teens
TYPE OF RESOURCE: MAILING LIST
LAST UPDATED: February 9, 1995
LONG DESCRIPTION: Y-RIGHTS is a general purpose children's rights
discussion group. It is open to everybody, whether
kid, teen, young adult, parent, teacher, professor,
activist, lawyer, government official - and those who
don't fit those catagories!
There are participants on the list that are lawyers,
medical doctors, teachers, professors, teenagers,
kids, college/university students, unemployed folks
struggling to keep Internet access, government
officials, child welfare advocates, social workers,
ministers, and people who just won't be fit in a
catagory - all coming together under the common
banner of being interested in the rights of kids and
teenagers.
The discussion topics vary from week to week, and it
is a very conversational list. Topics such as
privacy issues (locker room searches, etc.), suicide,
sex, the law, freedom of speech or association,
religion, drugs, mental problems, mental solutions,
parents (and parenting), are all past, present and
future topics. It's somewhat pragmatic, dealing less
with theoretical rights and more with practical
issues. [Those more interested in a theoretical
discussion on children's rights will be more interested
in GTORY 51 - TCS-LIST@NETCOM.COM]
