Focus on prisons. July 8 - September 26, 2003
During July, August and September AI-Ithaca will present a series of
programs on the subject of prisons. The series starts with 2 programs
created with the late Father Chico, a passionate defender of the right of
Brazilian prisoners not to be tortured. Next are programs highlighting
efforts by private individuals to promote education in US prisons. The
final programs focus on individual prisoners such as Gary Graham who was
executed for a murder he probably did not commit and political prisoners
Koigi wa Wamwere, Grigory Pasko and Leyla Zana.

Prison conditions in Brazil
463 (R #283) Focus on Brazil's Prisons 7/13, 15, 18
Brazil's system of detention is in crisis as indicated by weekly riots and
almost daily serious assaults. Father Francisco Reardon, National
Coordinator of Brazil's Prison Ministries, advocates that detainees should
not to be tortured, and that confessions extracted under torture should not
be admissible in court. He shared his experiences with Martin Kelly,
during an interview taped before a life audience in the Greater Ithaca
Activities Center on September 2, 1999. Father Reardon suffered a heart
attack upon his return in Brazil and died on November 15, 1999.

Martin Kelly talks to Winthrop Wetherbee about his experiences w/teaching
in NYS's prisons. Professor Wetherbee teaches English at Cornell
University & Auburn prison.

In this program, former NYS Assemblyman Marty Luster interviews Deborah
Small, Director of Public Policy and Community Outreach at the Lindesmith
Center" on the Rockefeller Drug Laws, Tish Pearlman interviews Pete Myers
and Wayles Browne states Amnesty International's concerns on mandatory
sentences.

Despite appeals from abolitionist groups and a wide range of public
figures, the State of Texas proceeded with the execution of inmate Gary
Graham, by lethal injection on June 22, 2000. This video describes how
Graham, also known as Shaka Sankofa was convicted of a 1981 murder on the
basis of one highly disputed eyewitness account. Ithaca's Amnesty
International group began working this case in 1996.

Leyla Zana writings from prison
Two short videos about political prisoners and the international campaigns
to free them. Russian journalist Grigory Pasko was imprisoned for exposing
the dumping of nuclear waste in the Sea of Japan. He was freed early this
year. Turkish Parliamentarian Leyla Zana is serving a 15 year sentence for
raising the Kurdish issue when she took her oath of office.

Koigi wa Wamwere was Kenya's most prominent political prisoner in the
1990's. He was freed through an international campaign in 1996. This is
part of what the former Cornell student had to say when he came to Ithaca
to thank the people who had worked for his freedom.

Subjects include: an advocacy group for prisoners in Burundi, juvenile
prisoners in the US and the detention of asylum seekers.

Produced by Amnesty International this video tells the story of Dominga Sic
Ruiz, who as a child survived the 1982 massacre of her native community of
Río Negro and was later given up for adoption in the USA. As an adult she
decided to go back to Guatemala to confront the past, to look for relatives
and to demand justice for the atrocities suffered by her people.

Burundi is entering its 11th year of civil war. The peace agreement signed
in 2000 is being implemented amidst violent outbreaks involving the
military and armed opposition groups. Human rights abuses are being
committed by all parties. At least 200,000 people, most of them civilians,
have been killed.

a film that explains where and how African Americans were educated in
Columbia County before desegregation. Narrated by an alumna of Columbia
School and a VISTA volunteer on staff with the CDC, the program visits
several of the school sites and makes use of oral interviews with former
students and personnel of the various schools
