CESR, CLEO, and CHESS at the Millennium

The Cornell Laboratory of Nuclear Studies and the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source are planning a series of events for December 9 and 10, 1999, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the beginning of operations of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), the CLEO collaboration, and the CHESS x-ray facility.

On Thursday the 9th there will be tours of CESR, CLEO, and CHESS, and in the evening a banquet at the Statler Ballroom on campus. On Friday the 10th there will be symposium at the Center for the Theatre Arts. The symposium will feature speakers from Cornell and elsewhere talking about the early days, the accomplishments of the last 20 years, and the prospects for the future -- in accelerator physics, in e+e- physics at the b-quark threshold, and in x-ray science. Speakers confirmed so far are Don Bilderback, Sol Gruner, Steve Harrison, Jon Rosner, David Rubin, John Seeman, Al Silverman, Maury Tigner, and Mike Witherell. More prospective speakers are being contacted.

There will also be a panel discussion on the topic of science, education and funding. The panel will include representatives from Congress, the NSF, DOE, and NIH funding agencies, and Cornell.

Invitation

The symposium is open to everyone interested in the physics of CESR, CLEO and CHESS. An invitation for the symposium and the banquet was sent out to current and former members of CESR, CLEO and CHESS whose e-mail address we had on file. Over a 20 year period many people have been affiliated with CESR and clearly our records are not complete. Please help us to reach everybody by either telling your friends and colleagues about this event or by sending us updated address information. You can contact any member of the organizing committee for further information.
