Cornell Science Sampler Series at Weill Medical College, April 21, 2007

* As of April 17, 2007 registration is still OPEN for the April 21 Cornell Science Sampler Series! If you register after April 17th, you will not receive a confirmation email.

ON-SITE REGISTRATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT!

Staff, faculty and graduate students from LEPP, the Cornell Center for Materials Research, the Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers, and the Cornell Center Radiophysics and Space Research collaborate to bring professional development workshops to elementary school teachers as part of this on-going series at Weill Medical College.

Harlem Children's Zone, March 9, 2007

Cornell University provided teaching/learning activities for middle school students at Harlem Children's Zone and led professional development workshops for elementary school teachers working at this non-profit, community-based organization.

Cornell Science Sampler Series at Weill Medical College, March 10, 2007

Staff, faculty and graduate students from LEPP, the Cornell Center for Materials Research, and the Cornell Center for Nanoscale Systems collaborated to bring this series to Weill Medical College.

Preparing Future Physics Teachers - 2006 Summer Workshop, Cornell University

Cornell University will be hosting a workshop this summer in order to examine the nation-wide shortage of qualified physics teacher and the role higher learning institutions could play in alleviating this shortage. LEPP is inviting individuals who are actively involved in this effort to present at this workshop and share their knowledge and experience with an audience of university and college physics department representatives. Email Lora Hine at lkh24@cornell.edu if you are interested in attending.

Challenges in Implementing Physics First: Changing the High School Science Sequence - 2004 Summer Workshop, Cornell University

LEPP is taking an active role in supporting the Physics for All ("Physics First") movement in public schools throughout New York State. LEPP hosted a workshop devoted to addressing this topic during the summer of 2004. The Laboratory's participation in examining and/or altering the school science sequence promotes systemic education reform, encourages scientific literacy, and provides professional development opportunities for educators. Science Teachers Association of New York State - LEPP Workshops at the Annual Conference 2004

Visitors From Outer Space in Your Classroom - Building Cloud Chambers and Observing Cosmic Rays - Learn about the origin of cosmic rays and how to observe these subatomic particles in your own classroom. A teacher's guide providing valuable background information is accompanied by a student handout containing procedure steps for your students to assemble their own cloud chamber.

2004 STANYS participants build cloud chambers and view the paths left behind by subatomic particles at the workshop 'Visitors for Space!' hosted by LEPP.

Interpreting Event Diagrams Generated from e+/e- Particle Collisions

This session includes an introductory presentation to CLEO, the particle detector at Wilson Laboratory. Using images from the detector, along with basic ground rules for interpreting particle collisions, participants will determine the identity of decay particles created following electron-positron annihilations.
